On the 21st Sunday after Pentecost, with the blessing of the Primate of the Orthodox Church of Moldova, His Eminence Metropolitan Vladimir, His Grace Siluan, Bishop of Orhei and Vicar of the Metropolis, officiated the Holy and Divine Liturgy at the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Nativity of the Lord in Chișinău. His Grace was assisted at the service by the clergy of the Cathedral.
The parable of the rich man and poor Lazarus reveals to us the mystery of human destiny after death and the elements that determine it. It shows that eternity is not decided beyond the grave, but here on earth — through the way we live, through our deeds and choices.
The Gospel of this Sunday unveils the profound meaning of life in the light of Christ. Through self-sacrificing love and almsgiving, through the voluntary renunciation of selfishness and the desire to accumulate, one does not lose but gains everything — true joy and communion with God.
This parable was spoken for the enlightenment of all. Before us stand two figures: the rich man, blinded by his wealth, and poor Lazarus, who, through humility and patience, gained the imperishable treasure. Therefore, when we see someone suffering, let us not consider them unfortunate, and when we see someone living in abundance, let us not call them blessed. God looks not at outward appearances but at the heart. Neither clothing, appearance, nor possessions measure the value of life, but the fruits of the soul — faith, patience, and love. Truly blessed are not the rich but the virtuous; worthy of pity are not those deprived of wealth, but those poor in good deeds.
The Gospel remains ever alive, above the pleasures and injustices of the world. Some receive it and live by it, while others reject it and lose themselves in fleeting pleasures. Yet the freedom to choose remains with each of us, according to the Lord’s word: “If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead” (Luke 16:31).
Let us, therefore, listen to Christ the Risen One and receive Him into our hearts, so that this earthly life may become the beginning of the Kingdom that is to come.
