  • The Fifth Sunday of the Great Lent, of St. Mary of Egypt, celebrated at the Metropolitan Cathedral

With the blessing of Metropolitan Vladimir, the Divine Liturgy in the Nativity of the Lord Cathedral on the Fifth Sunday of the Great Lent, the Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt, was celebrated by Vicar Bishop Siluan of Orhei.

His Grace Siluan was assisted at the service by archpriest Vadim Cheibas, Metropolitan Secretary and Dean of the Cathedral, and a synaxis of priests and deacons of the holy shrine.

The Fifth Sunday of the Great Lent is called by the name of St. Mary of Egypt, underlining her ascetic doing and great spiritual gifts. In her early youth, Mary lived a very sinful and promiscuous life, but she deeply repented and turned to God with all her heart. Abandoning sinful habits, Mary went to the Egyptian desert, spending the rest of her life in hermitage and ascetic efforts.

Venerable Mary’s life shows to the Christians that every human being is beloved child of God, and abandoning sinful life, through true and deep repentance, every person can enter the Heavenly Kingdom.
